Caring For Your Board

Your new Burnt Bee Butchers Block, chopping board, paddle board or serving platter can last a lifetime, if it's properly looked after. Being made from prime grade European white oak means that there will be fewer knots and scars in the wood compared to lower grade woods which are used in most boards, which is why they have to be cut into planks and glued, potentially creating weak points that split in years to come. That's why at Burnt Bee, all our boards are handmade from a single piece of prime grade oak, giving you peace of mind that it's made from the highest quality wood.

There are some do's and don'ts to make sure that your product is kept in the best condition whilst its wood matures.

Firstly the do's, and there's only 1!:

1. Your board or block should be re-oiled every 6 to 8 weeks, using a food safe mineral oil, which is readily available in the UK. Very simply, using a soft cloth, it should have a generous covering of the oil rubbed into the wood all over so that it soaks into the grain of the wood, preventing it from splitting and cracking. Think of it a bit like moisturising your own skin, it remains soft and supple and doesn't go dry and split if you look after it!

Next the don'ts:

1. Your Burnt Bee product is NOT dishwasher safe! Putting it through a dishwasher will strip all the oil from the wood, eventually causing it to dry out, split and crack.

2. Your Burnt Bee product should never be submerged in water, which will strip all the oil from the wood, causing it to dry out, split and crack. To clean your board, instead use a wood safe surface cleaner to wipe it clean, and then immediately dry it with a clean cloth.

3. Heat will burn and damage your Burnt Bee product so, tempting as it is to put a hot pan on it instead of the kitchen worktop, this will cause discolouration and cause drying out of the wood, causing it to crack and split.

If you can follow these simple steps, then you'll be able to enjoy your Burnt Bee block or board for many, many years to come.

Thank you.
